One of the fundamental goals of VFOA is to speak to the complexity around identity. A great deal can be lost when people groups are oversimplified and reduced to binary categorizations. Ideas about nationality, ethnicity, cultural assimilation, connection to place and definitions of “home” shift from generation to generation. This group of millennials in Panama is broadly categorized in order to honor a resistance to categorization, and to uphold the intricacies of expanding identities over time.
