Alan Amat
Spending time in both the public and private education systems of Panama gave Alan Amat a unique perspective on the culture of his native country, and also a sense of the differences between the two, whether it was the type of music students enjoyed or the cultural backgrounds of the teachers. Describing himself as a “normal” Panamanian of mixed heritage, Alanneverthelessrecognizes the role that racial heritagecontinues to playinPanama. Though of West Indian descent himself, Alan has witnessed firsthand the disparate treatment he has received when compared to his black friends, be it in interactions with the police or everyday events like shopping at the mall.These experiences have made Alan passionate about the law and being able to defend his rights and the rights of others,a passion that hasgreatly influencedhis university studies.
